Too often today we hear the phrases “good fats” and “bad “fats” thrown around. For years we were told a “no-fat diet” is best, and now they tell us that some fats are good and some are bad. How do we keep it all straight? Let’s break it down, shall we?

There are four types of dietary fats: monounsaturated fats, polyunsaturated fats, saturated fats and trans fats. All foods with any kind of fat intake fall into one of these four groups. In turn, these four groups are separated into two categories: “good fats” and “bad fats.”
